The Golden Ratio and Sacred Architecture
Phi (the golden ratio, approximately 1.618) appears when a line is divided so that the whole is to the larger part as the larger part is to the smaller. It is found in:
| Sacred Structure | Connection to Phi |
|---|---|
| Ark of the Covenant | Dimensions: 2.5 x 1.5 x 1.5 cubits (Exodus 25:10). The ratio 2.5/1.5 = 1.667, close to phi. The Ark’s proportions approximate the golden rectangle |
| Great Pyramid of Giza | The ratio of slant height to half-base = 1.618… (debated but measurably close) |
| Parthenon | The facade fits within a golden rectangle |
| Gothic cathedrals | Medieval builders encoded phi in window proportions, nave dimensions, and rose windows |
| Noah’s Ark | 300 x 50 x 30 cubits (Gen 6:15). 300/50 = 6, 50/30 = 1.667 — again approximating phi |
