Weakness Backed Bar Kokhba as messiah -- a catastrophically wrong call. Executed by Romans for teaching Torah
Key Act Began studying Torah at age 40, illiterate. Built a system that read meaning into every letter, crown, and ornament of the text. Declared Simon bar Kokhba the Messiah (132 CE). Was flayed alive by the Romans for continuing to teach Torah, reciting the Shema as he died
Source Talmud (Berakhot 61b; Menachot 29b); Mishnah

“All my life I have been troubled by the verse ‘with all your soul’ — meaning, even if He takes your soul. I wondered when I would have the chance to fulfill it. Now that I have the chance, shall I not?” — Rabbi Akiva, dying under Roman torture (Berakhot 61b)

The defining figure of the Mishnaic generation. Akiva’s hermeneutic method — treating every detail of the text as meaningful — shaped rabbinic interpretation forever. His political judgment was terrible (backing Bar Kokhba as messiah in 132 CE ended in catastrophe). His theological courage at his death became one of the bedrock images of Jewish martyrdom (Berakhot 61b).
