“But for you who fear my name, the sun of righteousness will rise with healing in its wings.” — Malachi 4:2
Lore: A naked child rides a white horse beneath a blazing sun, arms spread in pure joy. Behind the child, sunflowers grow in a walled garden (the Garden of Eden restored). A red banner streams from the child’s hand (the red of Rubedo, the final stage of alchemy — completion). The child is the Fool reborn. After death (XIII), healing (XIV), bondage (XV), destruction (XVI), hope (XVII), and darkness (XVIII), the Fool emerges as the child he was at the beginning — but now with full consciousness. This is not naivety; it is innocence recovered on the other side of experience. The Sun is the most positive card in the entire deck. Everything is illuminated. Everything is clear. The Fool can see the whole landscape and knows where he is.
Biblical Parallel: The Resurrection — Easter morning, the stone rolled away, the sun rising on the empty tomb (Matthew 28:1-6). “Unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 18:3) — innocence not as ignorance but as the final wisdom. “The sun of righteousness shall arise with healing in its wings” (Malachi 4:2). The Transfiguration, where Christ’s face “shone like the sun” (Matthew 17:2).
