Abraham's Army / The Sign of the Cross

Tradition	Meaning
Biblical	Abraham mustered 318 trained servants born in his household and rescued Lot from four kings (Genesis 14:14). A strangely specific number for a narrative that could have said “his men”
Early Church	The Epistle of Barnabas (2nd century) decodes 318 using Greek gematria: 300 = T (the Greek letter Tau, shaped like a cross) and 18 = IH (the first two letters of IESOUS/Jesus). Thus 318 = Jesus on the Cross. Abraham’s 318 servants “prefigure” salvation through the cross
Christian	The Council of Nicaea (325 AD) traditionally had 318 bishops in attendance — the same number as Abraham’s army. The early Church saw this as providential: just as Abraham’s 318 defeated the kings, the 318 bishops defeated Arianism
Jewish	The gematria of Eliezer (Abraham’s servant, Gen 15:2) = 318. The Talmud (Nedarim 32a) teaches that Abraham took only Eliezer — one man whose name equaled 318 — and God multiplied his strength. “318” may be a name, not a headcount
Esoteric	318 as a bridge number between traditions: Jewish gematria reads it as a name, Greek gematria reads it as a cross, and Church history reads it as a council. The same number, three entirely different decodings

A number that reads differently in every language: In Hebrew, 318 = Eliezer (one faithful servant). In Greek, 318 = IHT (Jesus + cross). In Church history, 318 = the bishops who defined the Creed. This is gematria working across civilizations.
