“How you have fallen from heaven, morning star, son of the dawn!” — Isaiah 14:12
The Name Problem:
- “Lucifer” = Latin for “light-bearer” / “morning star.” Appears in Isaiah 14:12 in the Vulgate. Originally referred to the King of Babylon, not a cosmic being
- “Satan” = Hebrew for “the accuser” / “adversary.” In Job, he’s a member of God’s court (a prosecuting attorney), not a rebel
- The fusion of Lucifer + Satan + the serpent + the dragon into one being happened gradually across centuries of Christian theology. Judaism does NOT make this fusion
- Jewish view: Satan is an angel doing his job (testing humanity). NOT a fallen rebel. NOT evil — he serves God’s purposes
- Christian view: Satan is a fallen archangel who leads a cosmic rebellion. THE enemy
- Esoteric view: Lucifer as the “light-bringer” who gives humanity knowledge (parallel to Prometheus). Not necessarily evil
