“Primal Man armed himself with the Five Elements of Light and descended to face the Darkness. And the Darkness devoured him.”
Lore: Primal Man (Ohrmizd Bay in Middle Persian, a name borrowed from the Zoroastrian supreme deity) is the champion sent by the Father of Greatness to defend the Realm of Light from the invasion (Kephalaia). The Mother of the Living emanated him. He donned his Five Sons — the five light elements (Air, Wind, Light, Water, Fire) — as armor. He descended to the border and fought.
He lost.
This is the most shocking moment in Manichaean mythology. The champion of Light, armed with divine elements, was defeated by Darkness (Shabuhragan). Evil overwhelmed him, devoured his light armor, and scattered the five elements throughout the Realm of Darkness. Primal Man fell into unconsciousness, trapped in the belly of the enemy. His light — the substance of the divine — was now mixed with darkness, distributed throughout the chaotic realm of evil.
This is why the material world exists. The entire cosmos — sun, moon, stars, earth, plants, animals, human bodies — is made from the mixture of devoured light and the substance of darkness (BeDuhn, The Manichaean Body). Every particle of light in every living thing is a fragment of Primal Man’s armor, still trapped, still waiting to be freed. Your soul is a piece of the defeated champion.
Parallel: Primal Man’s defeat and rescue echoes Christ’s descent into hell (the Harrowing of Hell), Inanna’s descent to the underworld (Sumerian — she was killed and hung on a hook), and Osiris’s dismemberment (Egyptian — scattered, then reassembled). But the Manichaean version is unique in one respect: the champion was sent to fight and lost. Inanna descended voluntarily. Christ descended after death. Primal Man was dispatched as a warrior and was overwhelmed. The cosmic war in Manichaeism is not a foregone conclusion — Light can actually be defeated by Darkness, at least temporarily.
