“The Column of Glory is the Perfect Man. It is the path of light ascending. Look at the Milky Way — that is the column of rescued souls, rising back to the Realm of Light.”
Lore: The Column of Glory is the Manichaean name for the Milky Way — but it is not metaphor (Kephalaia). In Manichaean cosmology, the bright band visible across the night sky is literally, physically, a column of light particles extracted from matter and now ascending back to the Realm of Light. When you look up at the Milky Way on a clear night, you are watching the cosmic rescue in progress (Lieu, Manichaeism in the Later Roman Empire and Medieval China).
The process: light particles are freed from matter through the work of the Third Messenger, the digestion of plants by the Elect, the death of living things, the slow grinding of the cosmic machine (Shabuhragan). Once freed, the particles rise to the moon, which acts as collecting vessel. This is why the moon waxes — it is filling with light. When full, it transfers the light to the sun, which carries it along the Column of Glory (the Milky Way) to the Realm of Light (BeDuhn, The Manichaean Body). The moon empties (waning) and begins collecting again. The lunar cycle is a visible monthly demonstration of cosmic rescue.
This is one of the most beautiful ideas in religious history: the phases of the moon explained as divine process, the Milky Way as highway of escaping souls, the entire night sky reimagined as a living diagram of salvation. Every Manichaean who looked up at the stars saw not astronomy but theology — the literal, visible mechanics of cosmic redemption playing out overhead every night.
Parallel: The Column of Glory echoes Jacob’s Ladder (Genesis 28 — a ladder between earth and heaven with angels ascending and descending), the Norse Bifrost (the Rainbow Bridge between Midgard and Asgard), and the Buddhist concept of the light body ascending at death. But the Manichaean version is unique in one respect: it is astronomically literal. Jacob’s Ladder is a dream. Bifrost is a myth. The Column of Glory is the Milky Way — a real, visible, physical thing that Manichaeans could point to and say, “There. That is the path. Watch it.”
