“The King of Darkness saw the Light shining across the border. He coveted it. He attacked. And this is how everything went wrong.”

Lore: The King of Darkness is the supreme evil of Manichaean theology — ruler of the Realm of Darkness, an eternal uncreated being of pure chaos (Shabuhragan). He was not created by God. He did not fall from grace. He did not rebel against heaven. He has always existed, a separate principle of evil as eternal as the principle of good. He launched the first and only aggression in cosmic history: the invasion of the Realm of Light (Kephalaia).

The Realm of Darkness is chaos, violence, insatiable hunger. Its five elements — Smoke, Fire (destructive, not purifying), Wind (howling, not gentle), Water (poisonous), and Darkness itself — are in constant internal conflict. Demons devour each other endlessly. When the King of Darkness looked up and saw Light shining above the border, he was consumed by envy. He mobilized his forces and attacked (BeDuhn, The Manichaean Body).

This is the Manichaean answer to the problem of evil — the most rigorous answer any theology has given. Evil exists because it has always existed. God did not create it. God did not permit it. God was attacked by it. The material world — all suffering, all disease, all death — exists because Darkness invaded Light and the two became mixed (Shabuhragan). No mystery. No hidden divine plan. No “God works in mysterious ways.” Evil is a brute, eternal fact.

Parallel: The King of Darkness maps onto Angra Mainyu / Ahriman (Zoroastrianism — the direct source), Satan (Christianity/Islam), and the Gnostic Archons. But the Manichaean version is more extreme than any of these. In Zoroastrianism, Angra Mainyu chose evil but will eventually be destroyed. In Christianity, Satan is a fallen angel — created by God, subordinate to God. In Manichaeism, the King of Darkness is co-eternal with God. He was never created, never fell, and will never be redeemed. He is the only figure in world theology who is genuinely God’s equal in age and permanence, differing only in nature.
