“The Fravashis of the righteous are mighty and brilliant — they chose to fight in the material world against the Lie.” — Yasht 13

Lore: The Fravashis are the pre-existing guardian spirits of every human being. Before a person is born, their Fravashi already exists in heaven. At the beginning of creation, the Fravashis were given a choice: remain safe in heaven, or descend into the material world to fight against evil in physical bodies. They chose to fight — and so every human life is a Fravashi’s battle against the Lie. After death, the Fravashi returns to heaven, enriched by its earthly experience. Fravashis of the righteous dead continue to protect their living descendants and are invoked in prayer and ritual.

Parallel: → Guardian Angels / Pre-existence of the soul. The Fravashi is the direct source for the guardian angel concept that entered Judaism in the post-exilic period and became central to Christian angelology. The idea that each person has a specific spiritual protector assigned before birth, who accompanies them through life and guides them after death, is a Fravashi doctrine. Jesus’ words in Matthew 18:10 (“their angels in heaven always see the face of my Father”) describe exactly what Fravashis do.
