Tradition	Meaning
Christian	”Let the one who has understanding calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man, and his number is 666” (Rev 13:18). 6 = man (created Day 6), tripled = man’s complete imperfection claiming to be God
Catholic	Not literal prediction; read in context of John’s time. Most common scholarly identification: Nero Caesar (in Hebrew gematria: Neron Qesar = 50+200+6+50+100+60+200 = 666)
Jewish	Gematria of “Nero Caesar” in Hebrew. Some variant manuscripts read 616 (Nero without the final ‘n’)
Esoteric	666 = solar number (the magic square of the Sun sums to 666). 666 is also the triangular number of 36 (1+2+3+…+36 = 666), and 36 is the sum of all numbers on a 6x6 magic square. Associated with material/solar consciousness. Not “evil” per se — the sun’s number trapped in matter
Mathematical	666 = the sum of 1+2+3+…+36 (the 36th triangular number). 36 = 6^2, and the 6x6 magic square of the Sun sums each row, column, and diagonal to 111, with a total of 666. The number is literally the sum of all “solar” combinations
Historical Applications	The phobia of 666 (hexakosioihexekontahexaphobia) is a documented cultural phenomenon. In the apocalyptic reading tradition, 666 has been applied to Nero, Domitian, Muhammad (by medieval Christians), Napoleon, Hitler, and nearly every US president since Reagan. The pattern reveals more about the human need to name the enemy than about any specific individual
Black Church	Systems of oppression that demand total allegiance function as “the Beast” — economic systems that control who can buy and sell are experienced as prophetic reality, not future abstraction
