One symbol, claimed by everyone, understood by none the same way.

Tradition	Name	Meaning
Biblical	Eye of God	”The eyes of the Lord are in every place, keeping watch on the evil and the good” (Prov 15:3). Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiasticus
Christian	Eye of Providence	God’s omniscience; often in a triangle (Trinity). Appears on churches from the Renaissance onward
Catholic	Eye in Triangle	Officially represents the Holy Trinity’s watchfulness. Featured in Church architecture, especially Baroque period
Masonic	All-Seeing Eye	The “Great Architect of the Universe” watching over Masonic work. Appears above the Master’s chair in lodge. NOT the same as the Christian Trinity to Masons — it represents a non-denominational divine watchfulness
US Government	Eye on Great Seal	On the reverse of the $1 bill above the unfinished pyramid. Adopted 1782. Designed by non-Masons (Charles Thomson, William Barton) but often attributed to Masonic influence. Latin: ANNUIT COEPTIS (“He approves our undertaking”)
Esoteric	Third Eye / Ajna	Inner vision; spiritual sight beyond the physical. The pineal gland as the “seat of the soul” (Descartes)
Egyptian	Eye of Horus (Wadjet)	Protection, royal power, health. The left eye of Horus, restored by Thoth. Functionally different from the Eye of Providence but visually similar enough to generate confusion
