(Eye of Providence)
One symbol, claimed by everyone, understood by none the same way.
| Tradition | Name | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Biblical | Eye of God | ”The eyes of the Lord are in every place, keeping watch on the evil and the good” (Prov 15:3). Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiasticus |
| Christian | Eye of Providence | God’s omniscience; often in a triangle (Trinity). Appears on churches from the Renaissance onward |
| Catholic | Eye in Triangle | Officially represents the Holy Trinity’s watchfulness. Featured in Church architecture, especially Baroque period |
| Masonic | All-Seeing Eye | The “Great Architect of the Universe” watching over Masonic work. Appears above the Master’s chair in lodge. NOT the same as the Christian Trinity to Masons — it represents a non-denominational divine watchfulness |
| US Government | Eye on Great Seal | On the reverse of the $1 bill above the unfinished pyramid. Adopted 1782. Designed by non-Masons (Charles Thomson, William Barton) but often attributed to Masonic influence. Latin: ANNUIT COEPTIS (“He approves our undertaking”) |
| Esoteric | Third Eye / Ajna | Inner vision; spiritual sight beyond the physical. The pineal gland as the “seat of the soul” (Descartes) |
| Egyptian | Eye of Horus (Wadjet) | Protection, royal power, health. The left eye of Horus, restored by Thoth. Functionally different from the Eye of Providence but visually similar enough to generate confusion |
