The most explicitly evil spirit in the Theurgia-Goetia. While most aerial spirits are “mixed” or “good,” Buriel is simply labeled a liar. He commands water spirits and uses their fluid, shifting nature to embody deception itself. He represents the danger of the entire aerial magic system: even spirits classified as neutral can be fundamentally untrustworthy.

Shares a name with the archangel Uriel but is explicitly NOT the same entity. This naming collision illustrates a common problem in demonology: names recur across traditions without consistent identity. The aerial Uriel is a minor wandering duke of mixed nature — a far cry from the archangel who guards Eden’s gate and guides Enoch through the heavens. The name simply means “Light of God” and was apparently common enough to be reused.
