“Every night the serpent rises. Every night the serpent is cut. Every morning the sun returns. The battle never ends.”

Apophis is the giant chaos serpent of Egyptian mythology — an enormous snake that dwells in the Duat (underworld) and attacks Ra’s boat every single night, attempting to devour the sun and return all of creation to the primordial void. He cannot be permanently killed; he regenerates and attacks again the next night. The parallel to the Dragon of Revelation (Rev 12:3-9) and to Satan himself is unmistakable: a great serpent/dragon that wages cosmic war against the divine order, that is defeated repeatedly but returns, and that threatens to consume all of creation. Where Apophis fights Ra nightly, the Dragon fights Michael and is cast down (Rev 12:7-9). Where Apophis threatens eternal darkness, Satan threatens eternal separation from God. The pattern is the same: cosmic serpent versus cosmic light, forever.
