Title: The Divine-Human King

Tradition: Korean Creation Myth / Historical Legend

Description:

Born in 2333 BC of Hwanung and the bear-woman, Dangun is no mere mythological figure—he is Korea’s founding anchor, the point from which all Korean dynasties claim legitimacy. He ruled from Asadal (often identified with modern Pyongyang) and established the first Korean kingdom, Gojoseon, which lasted 2,000 years.

Dangun embodies the successful integration of divine heritage into human kingship. Where Hwanung is the descending god, Dangun is the rising human—the product of both worlds, equally at home in heaven and earth. In muism, shamans invoke Dangun to establish authority (shamans are sometimes called the “heirs of Dangun’s shamanism”), to bless new ventures, and to connect present action to the deep root of Korean identity.

Dangun’s birthday, Gaecheonjeol (3 October), remains a major Korean holiday, centering the nation’s spiritual calendar on this figure.
