Serapis

Serapis is the most cynical entity in this compendium — a god manufactured by the Ptolemaic dynasty to unite Greek settlers and native Egyptians under a single worship. Ptolemy I (c. 305 BC) commissioned his advisors (including the Egyptian priest Manetho and the Greek Eumolpid Timotheus) to create a deity that would combine Osiris and the sacred Apis bull with visual characteristics of Zeus, Hades, and Asclepius. The result: a bearded, enthroned god with a grain-basket (modius) on his head, accompanied by a three-headed dog (Cerberus). He was the ruler of the afterlife (Osiris), the healer (Asclepius), and the supreme god (Zeus) — all in one convenient package.

It worked. The cult of Serapis and Isis became the dominant religion of Ptolemaic Egypt and spread across the Roman Empire. The great Serapeum of Alexandria housed a colossal statue and was one of the wonders of the ancient world. When the Christian patriarch Theophilus destroyed it in 391 AD, it was one of the last great acts of pagan temple destruction — and a landmark in the triumph of Christianity over the mystery religions.
