The Millennium / Fullness
Traditions
| Tradition | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Premillennial | Literal 1,000-year reign of Christ on earth after the Second Coming (Revelation 20:2-7) |
| Amillennial (Catholic/Orthodox) | Symbolic of a “ridiculously long period” — the entire Church Age between the Resurrection and Second Coming |
| Postmillennial | A golden age of Christianity before Christ returns — the Church gradually transforms the world before the millennium |
| Jewish | ”A thousand years in Your sight are but as yesterday” (Psalm 90:4). This verse generated the 6,000-year cosmic week: 6 days of creation = 6,000 years of human history, followed by the 7th-millennium Sabbath rest (the Messianic Age). The Talmud (Sanhedrin 97a) preserves this tradition |
| Buddhist | A kalpa (cosmic eon) is subdivided into thousands of sub-periods. The current historical Buddha, Shakyamuni, is said to be succeeded by 1,000 Buddhas who will manifest in this eon — a thousand revelations for a thousand ages |
| Zoroastrian | The Persian Zoroastrian cosmic scheme divides all of time into four periods of 3,000 years each (total: 12,000 years) — the ages of creation, mixture, struggle, and renovation (Frashegird). Time itself is structured in multiples of a thousand |
| Islamic | The Quran uses 1,000 (alf) as the number of fullness: “a day… equal to a thousand years of your counting” (Quran 22:47). The number of divine signs (ayat) permeating creation is beyond counting, but 1,000 marks the threshold of the immeasurable |
