Whoever holds the keys controls access. The key is always about authority.

Tradition	Form	Meaning
Biblical	Keys of the Kingdom	”I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven” (Matt 16:19). Given by Christ to Peter
Christian	Authority to bind and loose	The keys represent the power of the gospel — to open salvation and to close it. Protestant traditions emphasize this as given to the whole Church, not Peter alone
Catholic	Papal emblem	Two crossed keys (gold and silver) on the papal coat of arms. The gold key = power in heaven, the silver key = power on earth. Only the Pope holds the “keys of Peter.” The Vatican flag bears crossed keys
Biblical	Key of David	”He who has the key of David, who opens and no one shuts, and shuts and no one opens” (Rev 3:7; cf. Isa 22:22). Christ holds the master key. Messianic authority
Masonic	Key of knowledge	The key appears in several degrees. The “key to Masonry” = the tongue (silence protects the craft). In the Royal Arch, the key helps unlock the vault where the lost Word is found
Esoteric	Keys of initiation	Each degree of initiation provides a new “key” to understanding. The key as symbol of hidden knowledge. The ankh as the “key of life.” Hecate holds the keys to the underworld
