Bread & Wine
Sacred Symbol

Bread & Wine

/ Communion

From Melchizedek’s table to the Last Supper to the Masonic banquet — bread and wine as the oldest sacred meal.

TraditionFormMeaning
Biblical (OT)Melchizedek’s offeringThe priest-king of Salem brought out bread and wine to Abram (Gen 14:18). No sacrifice of blood — just bread and wine. A priesthood older than Aaron’s
ChristianThe Lord’s SupperJesus at the Last Supper: “This is my body… this is my blood” (Matt 26:26-28). Memorial meal. Most Protestant traditions: symbolic remembrance
CatholicThe EucharistTransubstantiation: the bread and wine become the actual body and blood of Christ. Not symbolic — ontologically changed. “The source and summit of the Christian life” (Vatican II). The central act of Catholic worship
JewishKiddush / ShabbatWine sanctified with a blessing every Shabbat and festival. Challah bread. The Passover seder uses both wine (4 cups) and unleavened bread (matzah)
MasonicTable Lodge / Agape FeastFormal Masonic banquets (Table Lodges) feature ceremonial toasts. The “agape” or love feast in some traditions. Bread and wine as fraternal communion, not sacrament
Esoteric”Bread of life”Grain mysteries: Demeter/Ceres (grain), Dionysus/Bacchus (wine). Death of the grain and the vine = resurrection symbolism predating Christianity. Bread = body of the earth, wine = blood of the earth

The Melchizedek question: Melchizedek appears twice in the Old Testament (Gen 14:18, Psalm 110:4) and once in Hebrews 7. He has no recorded genealogy, no beginning or end. He offered bread and wine — not blood sacrifice. The author of Hebrews calls Christ “a priest forever in the order of Melchizedek,” connecting Christ’s priesthood to the bread-and-wine offering rather than the Levitical blood system.
