Every human being, according to Islamic tradition, has a qareen — a jinn assigned as a personal companion. The qareen’s purpose is to whisper temptation and test the person’s faith. Unlike the demonic tempter in Christianity, the qareen is not inherently evil; it simply does its job of presenting choices. The Prophet Muhammad said of his own qareen, “My qareen has become Muslim” — indicating that even a jinn can convert and cease its opposition. The concept of the qareen reflects Islam’s understanding that temptation is not external evil but internal struggle, and that every soul is tested by a companion who knows it intimately. Some Hadith suggest the qareen can be influenced by the person’s righteousness: the more someone surrenders to God, the less the qareen can sway them. Others suggest the qareen becomes an advocate for the person on the Day of Judgment if the person was righteous.
