Divine Trial

their magic cannot be refused by those who seek their knowledge, as they were sent by Allah to test humanity's moral resolve.

“They followed what the devils taught during Solomon’s reign… and what was revealed to the two angels at Babylon, Harut and Marut. But the two angels did not teach anyone without first warning: ‘We are only a trial, so do not disbelieve’” (Quran 2:102). Harut and Marut taught magic — specifically sorcery to break up marriages — but always warned people first. The parallel to 1 Enoch’s Watchers is striking: divine beings share forbidden knowledge with humanity. But unlike the Watchers, Harut and Marut warned people that learning was a test. Those who learned anyway chose to fail.
