The Ladder

A vertical bridge between worlds. Whoever ascends the ladder enters heaven; whoever descends carries something divine into matter.

Christian (Eastern)	Ladder of Divine Ascent	John Climacus (7th century, St. Catherine’s Monastery, Sinai) wrote The Ladder of Divine Ascent with 30 rungs of monastic virtue. The famous icon shows monks climbing while demons drag some off into the jaws of a dragon. Required reading in Orthodox Lent
Mithraic	Seven-rung initiation ladder	The Mithraic initiate ascended through 7 grades (Corax, Nymphus, Miles, Leo, Perses, Heliodromus, Pater), each associated with a planet. Origen (Contra Celsum 6.22) describes the ladder of seven gates — lead (Saturn), tin (Venus), bronze (Jupiter), iron (Mercury), money-alloy (Mars), silver (Moon), gold (Sun)
Buddhist	Seven steps from heaven	The infant Buddha took seven steps in each of the four directions immediately after birth, lotuses springing up beneath each footfall, and declared “I am the chief of the world.” The descent from Tushita heaven is depicted as a triple ladder (gold, crystal, silver) at Sankissa
Jain	Ratnatraya / fourteen gunasthanas	The “three jewels” (right faith, right knowledge, right conduct) form the ladder of liberation. The soul ascends fourteen stages (gunasthanas) to reach moksha at the top of the universe
Masonic	Theological Ladder	The “ladder of three principal rounds” — Faith, Hope, and Charity — appears on the Entered Apprentice tracing board, ascending from earth to a star in the heavens. Direct visual descendant of Jacob’s ladder
Esoteric / Alchemical	Scala philosophorum	The ladder of the philosophers; the stages of the Great Work. Each rung = one purification. Appears in Khunrath’s Amphitheatrum (1595) and many alchemical engravings

Up and down at once: Genesis specifies the angels were “ascending and descending” — in that order, not the reverse. The angels were already on earth when the ladder appeared. The traffic on the cosmic ladder runs both ways simultaneously.
