The Rainbow

Rainbow

God’s weapon laid down. The bow set in the clouds is not decorative — it is a war bow, pointed upward, away from the earth.

TraditionFormMeaning
BiblicalNoahic covenant”I set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between me and the earth” (Gen 9:13). The Hebrew word qeshet means both “rainbow” and “war bow.” God hangs up His weapon
ChristianGod’s faithfulnessThe rainbow = God’s promise never to destroy the earth by flood again. A one-sided covenant (God binds Himself, not Noah). Appears around God’s throne (Ezek 1:28, Rev 4:3)
CatholicMarian symbolIn some traditions, Mary is depicted standing on a rainbow — the bridge between heaven and earth. The rainbow in Christian art signals God’s mercy
JewishSign of mixed blessingThe rainbow means God remembers His covenant — but it also means the world deserved destruction. Seeing a rainbow prompts a specific blessing but also reflection on humanity’s sinfulness. Some traditions: one should not stare at it
KabbalisticThe Sefirah YesodThe rainbow reflects the six colors associated with the lower Sefirot. The covenant of Yesod (Foundation) is linked to the rainbow’s appearance
EsotericSeven rays7 colors = 7 planets, 7 chakras, 7 stages of alchemical transformation. The rainbow as the bridge between worlds (cf. Bifrost in Norse mythology)

A war bow hung in the sky: The Hebrew qeshet (bow) is the same word used for a weapon of war. When God “sets His bow in the cloud,” the image is of a warrior hanging up his weapon after battle — aimed upward, away from the earth. The rainbow is not merely decorative; it is a sign of God disarming Himself. This reading transforms a children’s Sunday-school image into one of the most dramatic gestures in scripture.

The Jewish caution: While Christians tend to see the rainbow as purely positive, Jewish tradition is more ambivalent. The Talmud (Chagigah 16a) warns against staring at a rainbow because it reflects the glory of God. Seeing one prompts the blessing: “Blessed are You… who remembers the covenant, is faithful to His covenant, and keeps His promise.” But the rainbow’s appearance also implies that the generation deserved destruction — and God is restraining Himself.
