Tirthankar | Jain

The first of the 24 tirthankaras, Rishabhanatha is Jainism’s legendary founder-figure: a primordial king who taught humanity agriculture, writing, and the arts of civilization, then renounced his entire kingdom to pursue liberation. Scholars have noted that an Indus Valley seal depicting a figure in yogic posture may represent him, placing his veneration among the oldest in the subcontinent. In the Jain account he lived an incomprehensibly vast span of time before achieving kevala-jnana and final liberation atop Mount Ashtapada.

Parallels: Prometheus (culture-hero who taught humanity the arts); Adam (first human ancestor); the Hindu avatar Vamana — the Bhagavata Purana absorbs Rishabha as a Vishnu avatar, which Jains regard as a respectful misattribution.
