Cosmic Substance | Jain
In Jain physics, dharma is not a deity, a moral law, or a religious duty — it is a physical substance, one of the six dravyas (fundamental substances) that constitute the universe. Specifically, it is the medium of motion: without dharma pervading the cosmos, nothing could move. Its counterpart adharma is the medium of rest. Neither dharma nor adharma acts on things; they simply provide the conditions in which motion or rest can occur, as water provides the medium for fish without pushing them. This is one of the most distinctive contributions of Jain metaphysics — a universe in which even motion has a physical substrate that is not God.
Parallels: The Tao (the underlying principle that enables all things without acting itself); the Aristotelian ether (the medium through which celestial bodies move); spacetime in general relativity (the fabric whose properties enable motion without itself being a mover).
