Heavenly Illumination

Amaterasu emerges from the Heavenly Rock Cave, restoring light to the world and granting all allies divine radiance and protection from shadow.

Divine Radiance

Amaterasu's presence banishes darkness and grants constant blessing to those under her gaze; her absence brings eternal night.

Goddess | Shinto

Goddess of the sun and ancestor of the imperial family; her withdrawal into the rock cave plunges the world into darkness; coaxed out by the lewd dance of Ame-no-Uzume. The Yata no Kagami (sacred mirror) — one of the three Imperial Regalia — is kept at the Ise Grand Shrine in her honor. She is the supreme kami of the Shinto pantheon and the divine source of imperial legitimacy.

Parallels: Ra (Egyptian), Apollo (Greek), Surya (Hindu) — though uniquely female among supreme solar deities; Demeter in cave-withdrawal myth See also: Susanoo, Tsukuyomi, Izanagi and Izanami
