Water / Baptism

The first element in creation (Gen 1:2). The last image in scripture (Rev 22:1). Everything between is water.

Tradition	Form	Meaning
Biblical	Creation, Flood, Red Sea, Jordan	Spirit moved over the waters (Gen 1:2). The Flood cleansed the earth (Gen 6-8). The Red Sea parted for Israel (Exodus 14). The Jordan River entered for the Promised Land (Joshua 3). Water = both life and judgment
Christian	Baptism	”Unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God” (John 3:5). Immersion = death, burial, resurrection with Christ. Some traditions: full immersion required; others: sprinkling or pouring
Catholic	Holy water / Baptism	Blessed water at every church entrance (stoups). Sign of the cross with holy water = renewal of baptismal vows. Baptism: essential sacrament, removes original sin. “The water of life” (Rev 22:17)
Jewish	Mikvah	Ritual immersion pool for purification. Required after menstruation, before marriage, for conversion, and for utensils. The living waters (mayim chayyim) must flow naturally
Masonic	Purification	Some Masonic rites include ritual washing. The chamber of reflection may include water as one of the elements. Water = purification before initiation
Islamic	Wudu / Ghusl	Ablution (wudu) before each prayer: washing hands, face, arms, feet. Full ritual bath (ghusl) for major purification. Zamzam water from Mecca is sacred
Esoteric	Elemental water	One of the four classical elements. Represents emotion, intuition, the unconscious, the feminine principle. “Water of life” = spiritual rebirth. The baptism of the initiate

Water as destroyer and savior: The same water that drowned Pharaoh’s army saved Israel. The same flood that destroyed the world preserved Noah. Water in scripture is never neutral — it always does both things at once. Baptism enacts this: the old self drowns, the new self rises.
